Worthshop inc., recognizes the power in having a sense of worth, and taking “worth steps” in the lives of children around us. One book that reminds me of the power of worth in action is, Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome by Dr. Joy Leary-DeGruy. In this book Dr. DeGruy shared how her father called each of his children to him on his death bed.
He then shared some tough experiences he had. These instances were confrontations with white racist elements, it was either swallow his manhood or possible be killed. He did as was expected to survive and with tears in his eyes he told his daughter, “I did it for you; I did it so you could have a better life, and not go through it”. What a powerful description of worth, purpose and cause.
Question, are you centered in “Why” you do what you do. Why do you keep going after encountering insults, injuries and attacks to your personhood. Who are you parting ways for with your life. What keeps you from exploding when tempted to retaliate. Who do think about that keeps you grounded when the ground shakes.
A person who lives only for self will in the end find them self by them-self. Our context through which we live is vital to our ability to withstand tragedies, and not only survive, but thrive. Children are depending on us to prepare their way. It is up to us to speak life into them, to sacrifice for them and then pass the baton onto them.
Worthshop is sending out a call to action today. We’re challenging and calling on all adults to pick one child outside of their own to pour worth, purpose and love into. Make time to talk to a child, spend time together doing an ordinary chore, interact with a child in some basic way. By doing this, we affirm worth and change the future one child at a time. Let’s do this....
